IOC, BOCOG Discuss Broadcast Issues With Olympic Rights Holders

BOCOG To Allow Olympic Rights Holders To
Broadcast Live Images From Around Beijing
The IOC yesterday said that satellite trucks "will be allowed to report live throughout Beijing and other [Olympic] co-host cities" after meeting with BOCOG and Games broadcasters in Beijing to "resolve TV coverage away from sports venues," according to Stephen Wade of the AP. Live broadcasts from Tiananmen Square "will be permitted, but on a restricted time schedule" of 6:00-10:00am and 9:00-11:00pm, local time. The meeting "involved only rights holders," and it was not "clear what effect it would have on non-rights holding broadcasters" (AP, 7/9). BOCOG said that broadcast nets would "be given licenses and frequencies to enable live coverage from around Beijing" and five other Chinese cities. DAILY VARIETY's Steve Clarke reports TV outlets also will be able to "pre-record programs and interviews" from Tiananmen Square. However, locations "classified as cultural relics, such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, would still require permission" (DAILY VARIETY, 7/10). AP Television News Dir of News Sandy MacIntyre "praised the accord" with BOCOG, but said that TV companies "were still waiting for Beijing to issue permits allowing them to beam coverage from around the city." The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Geoffrey Fowler writes the issue "underscored the challenges Beijing authorities face in opening the city to the world" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/10).

NOT EVERYONE'S HAPPY: In London, Ashling O'Connor writes BBC officials are "said to be fuming after two years of 'frustrating' negotiations with [BOCOG] resulted in a watered-down deal that limits the movement of broadcasters around Beijing." BOCOG said that it is restricting amount of live broadcasts from Tiananmen Square because of "competing demands for the ... square from tourists, heads of state and other VIPs" (LONDON TIMES, 7/10).
