NFL Names PA State Police Commish To Dir Of Strategic Security

NFL Names Miller Dir Of Strategic Security
The NFL yesterday named Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Jeffrey Miller to the newly created position of Dir of Strategic Security, effective August 18, according to Dave Goldberg of the AP. Miller will oversee "everything from pregame security screening for people entering stadiums to ensuring that team signals are not intercepted by opponents through electronic bugging or other devices." Miller has served as Police Commissioner since being appointed by Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell in '03 (AP, 7/8). NFL Senior VP/PR Greg Aiello said that Miller was "one of 22 people interviewed for the job." Aiello added that the NFL was "impressed with his background, which includes a number of training courses with the FBI and Drug Enforcement Agency." In Philadelphia, Angela Couloumbis notes part of Miller's new job description is to "police the 'use of electronic equipment by the league and clubs during games.'" Miller: "I think it's safe to say that the league is obviously sensitive to any issue which could affect the integrity of the product that they put out on the field" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 7/9).
