Dan Patrick To Join NBC's "Football Night In America" Set

Patrick (r) To Join Olbermann On
NBC's "Football Night In America"
Dan Patrick will join NBC's “Football Night in America” studio show beginning on September 7, the first Sunday of the ‘08 NFL season. The move reunites Patrick with Keith Olbermann for the first time on TV since the end of their partnership on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” 11 years ago. NBC Universal Sports & Olympics Chair Dick Ebersol said the show will now feature “one host and three co-hosts,” with Bob Costas remaining the host along with co-hosts Patrick, Olbermann and Cris Collinsworth. Ebersol said of the set-up of the show, which runs from 7:00-8:30pm ET, “Highlights that begin at 7:15 (ET) will be Dan and Keith. They’ll do the highlights straight through until about 8:00, with the exception of one segment that Cris and Bob will do somewhere around 7:30 or 7:40.” He added the mics for all members of the studio team, which also includes Tiki Barber, Jerome Bettis and Peter King, will be open, allowing them to comment when they feel like it. Patrick said if Costas "didn't sign off on this, there's no way I'd walk into the room" (Spencer Ruberti, THE DAILY). Ebersol said Costas "will do fewer highlights, and he knew this when he was pushing for this idea more than 15 months ago. Costas has never counted lines in his life" (MIAMI HERALD, 7/8). On Long Island, Neil Best wrote the move is "another step in the network's strategy of hiring everyone in America other than Chris (Boomer) Berman and Norman (Boomer) Esiason to work on the show” (NEWSDAY.com, 7/7).

MIXED MESSAGES: Patrick will also be part of NBC’s Super Bowl coverage when it has TV rights, as well as a member of NBC’s Olympics coverage beginning with the 2010 Vancouver Games (Ruberti). Patrick said that "when he left ESPN he was 'given the green light to do any TV I wanted.'" But Patrick added, "All of a sudden the language changed and I was precluded from doing anything until after the [Beijing] Olympics." Ebersol said that "as soon as ESPN learned he would reunite with Olbermann, it blocked Patrick." But in N.Y., Richard Sandomir notes ESPN Exec VP/Content John Skipper "has a very different story, one that excludes taking revenge on Olbermann." Skipper said that he was "aware of Patrick's unhappiness and that he was considering leaving ESPN when Skipper asked him as a favor to host ABC's NBA studio show" during the '06-07 season. Skipper said he told Patrick, "If you'll do the studio show, I'll let you out of the contract early." Skipper said that at that point he "did not tell Patrick that the price for getting out would be a clause that he not compete against ESPN for the duration of his deal." Skipper: "His contract itself didn't have a non-compete, but I told him over the July Fourth weekend [in '07] that if you have to go, it has to come with some conditions." Skipper added that it was during that weekend that Patrick "told him NBC was wooing him." Skipper: "We said you'll have to sign a noncompete" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/8).
