MGM Grand Files Suit Against Host Of NBA All-Star Weekend Event
The MGM Grand's attorneys filed a lawsuit in April in Clark County (NV) District Court against N.Y.-based event planner Standards and Behind the Bench: The National Basketball Wives Association, a nonprofit formed by wives of NBA players and coaches, according to Arnold Knightly of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. An "unpaid $138,807 bill stems from" the nonprofit's "Touching a Life Gala," which was held at the property during the NBA's '07 All-Star Weekend. The lawsuit claims that the MGM Grand is "still seeking payment for convention space and services used during the event." Behind the Bench attorney Brynee Baylor said that the MGM Grand is "dropping the nonprofit as a defendant in the lawsuit, but will continue to pursue the lawsuit against Standards." While the MGM Grand "feels Behind the Bench is not the responsible party, Standards has filed a lawsuit against the nonprofit" in New York. The MGM Grand is the second Las Vegas hotel to sue over an '07 NBA All-Star Weekend event. Wynn Las Vegas in early June filed a $50,000 lawsuit against Alonzo Mourning Charities Inc. regarding unpaid bills. That bill was "paid late Monday by an undisclosed party" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 7/2).
