Red Sox Talks With Sarasota Over Spring Training Home Continue

Red Sox Deny Imposing Deadline In Talks
For New Spring Training Home In Sarasota
The Red Sox yesterday "denied a report on the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's Web site that they have imposed a deadline on Sarasota officials regarding a new spring training facility," according to Jeff Horrigan of the BOSTON HERALD. Fenway Sports Group President and Red Sox COO Mike Dee: "The Red Sox view discussions with Sarasota city and county officials as an ongoing process that will run its course in due time. We will continue to explore all options, including Lee County and Sarasota, pertaining to our future spring training operations" (BOSTON HERALD, 7/2). However, in Sarasota, Roger Drouin writes the Red Sox are “ready to see a deal.” Dee: “We would like to understand what interest there is to pursue this further. We said, ‘We’ve been at this for a couple months and would like to know whether this would work out or not.’” Sarasota County and city officials “want to build a 12,000-seat ballpark on [Fruitville] Road, but first will have to convince the fair board to leave” their current location on the property. County officials offered the fair board 40 acres at another location, but “the fair board wants more land: about 90 acres.” However, both county and city officials said that “there is no way they can give that much land. And though they were hoping to put together a deal by the end of this month, it is doubtful that the fair board will even take a vote on the matter.” In order for a move to occur, “13 of 25 fair board members would have to approve the land swap” (Sarasota HERALD-TRIBUNE, 7/2).

CLOCK'S TICKING: Drouin yesterday wrote, "If Sarasota is going to land the Red Sox, those leading the effort have about a month to make it happen."  Sarasota city and county officials said that they "don't want to prolong talks with the Red Sox if they can't come up with a deal soon." But the "ticking clock limits the time local officials will have to finalize a pivotal land swap just as those negotiations appear to have hit a snag" (Sarasota HERALD-TRIBUNE, 7/1).
