NFL Remains At Forefront Of Environmental Awareness

The NFL has a "Green Team," headed by Dir of Community Affairs David Krichavsky, that "makes recommendations to an executive committee that in turn passes on its findings to the 32 franchises," according to Chris Harry of the ORLANDO SENTINEL, who writes under the header, "NFL Has Long Been At The Forefront Of Environmental Awareness."  For 16 years, the NFL has "incorporated environmental principles in the management of its signature events, most notably the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl and Kickoff Weekend." The "emphasis on the environment is magnified at the Super Bowl." Harry: "What began in 1993 with a simple recycling push during Super Bowl XXVII ... has evolved into an all-out blitz that sets the bar for professional sports." NFL Environmental Program Dir Jack Groh: "The goal is to leave a legacy and the NFL takes that very, very seriously." The NFL's "next stop is Tampa, site of Super Bowl XLIII in 2009." Groh is "scheduled to meet with local officials in coming weeks to finalize greening details." Meanwhile, the Eagles have been "on the cutting edge of environmental-friendly operations" since launching a Go Green initiative in '03, and the club offers employees "bonuses for driving hybrid vehicles and using alternative energies in their homes" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 7/1).

ROOKIE SALARY CAP: With NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell last week calling the current rookies contracts "ridiculous," ESPN's Marcellus Wiley said players “right now have to look at the CBA being torn up and say, ‘Okay, one of the first issues that’s going to be addressed is ... get a rookie salary cap like they do in the NBA and let these veterans get that money.' That has to be one of the first issues on the agenda.” Wiley: "Guys have realized that it’s better to play better in college than it is in the pros because you’re going to get a bigger payday just based off your BCS games, and that shouldn’t happen" (“NFL Live,” ESPN, 6/30). NFLPA President Kevin Mawae said of a rookie salary cap “I’m sure is going to be a point of contention and something that will be discussed during the (CBA).” But NFL Network’s Adam Schefter said a “lot of people feel the rookie wage scale is very effective.” Schefter noted there are deals "that jump out at you every single year, that get us talking about how out of kilter they all are,” including those of Dolphins OT Jake Long and Falcons QB Matt Ryan. However, there are "ways that the rookie wage scale right now is very effective, and in the majority of cases it works” (“NFL Total Access,” NFL Network, 6/30).
