Congressional CC Recommends New Contract For AT&T National

Congressional BOD Recommends New
Contract To Continue Hosting AT&T National
Congressional Country Club's BOD has recommended that the club's membership "approve a proposed new contract that would keep" the PGA Tour AT&T National, which is hosted by Tiger Woods, at the course through at least 2017, according to Leonard Shapiro of the WASHINGTON POST. The BOD has proposed a three-year contract for the event starting in 2012 with a three-year option. Congressional is "expected to earn about $1.5[M] a year over the length of the contract." A membership meeting "to discuss the proposal is scheduled for July 29, and the mail ballot vote is expected to be completed" by August 19. The initial two-year contract for the event was approved with more than 90% of the vote, and a one-year extension for '09 received more than 80%. The tournament will not be held at Congressional in 2010 or 2011 due to the course hosting the 2011 U.S. Open. AT&T National Chair Greg McLaughlin said that he "has been scouting potential venues for those two [years], but no decision is imminent." Sources said that Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia is "among the leading candidates to stage the tournament," though the Tiger Woods Foundation "also may look at other cities without a PGA Tour event, including Baltimore, Minneapolis and St. Louis." Meanwhile, Shapiro reports Woods "almost certainly won't be in attendance for the second year of his event" due to his recent knee surgery. Woods: "Flying swells up my leg pretty good. So my doctors advised me to lay low and stay away from planes" (WASHINGTON POST, 7/1). Woods said of the event's future at Congressional, "I want our golf tournament to be there in perpetuity. It is an unbelievable golf course and in our nation's capital on our nation's birthday. The stars couldn't get aligned any more than that. Hopefully, we can keep it there" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 7/1).
