Beijing Olympic Sponsors See Gains Despite Struggling Market

Beijing Olympic Sponsors Like Tsingtao Beer
Seeing Gains Despite Sluggish Economy
The Dow Jones 2008 Summer Games index, which tracks official sponsors and suppliers of this summer's Beijing Olympics and "measures shares of companies involved" with the Games, is up 6.5% over the past 12 months, according to Jerry Kronenberg of the BOSTON HERALD. The index also is up 18.3% since Dow Jones launched the index on December 31, 2006. The index includes "37 component stocks," including those for IOC TOP sponsor Coca-Cola and China's Tsingtao Beer. Cabot Money Management President & CIO Rob Lutts said that corporations "wealthy enough to afford Olympic sponsorships generally have an easier time in today's weak market." Kronenberg noted Anheuser-Busch, McDonald's and other Olympic sponsors "tend to stay on an even keel in recessionary periods." Dow Jones also has two other sports indexes, for soccer and Grand Prix, to "augment traditional market measures like the Dow industrials" (BOSTON HERALD, 6/30). Surveys by CTR Market Research and Sport & Markt indicated that Lenovo and Coca-Cola are the "two firms most clearly associated" with the Games. The CTR Market Research study shows that "nearly one-third of 2,000 urban residents surveyed correctly named" Coca-Cola as a sponsor, and "about 20[%] named Lenovo." However, 8.5% of respondents in the survey incorrectly listed PepsiCo as a sponsor. The CTR survey shows that "about a quarter of people associated Adidas with the Games," but 37% of respondents said that Chinese athletic shoe and apparel company Li Ning "has something to do with the Games," though it is not an official sponsor of the Olympics. In the Sport & Markt study, Lenovo was the most associated Olympic sponsor, while Coca-Cola was second (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 6/29).

WATCH WHAT YOU SAY: The BOSTON HERALD's Kronenberg in a separate piece wrote sponsors for this summer's Games "seek the thrill of advertising victory -- but risk the agony of public-relations defeat." Former John Hancock CEO David D'Alessandro said of activation for sponsors, "What's important is not to weigh in politically. If this year's sponsors start talking about Tibet, they'll have problems. But otherwise, consumers won't fundamentally believe that sponsors have any control over the political scene." Boston-based Rasky Baerlein Strategic Communications Chair & CEO Larry Rasky said sponsors need to "acknowledge the controversies -- then try to stay as far away from them as possible" (BOSTON HERALD, 6/30).

OLYMPICS NOT ENOUGH? Kodak last week unveiled plans for a new PGA Tour promotion, and FORBES.com's Tom Van Riper wrote for Kodak, a company that "has seen revenue drop 28% in the past two years after being slow to adapt to the digital photography phenomenon," the campaign is a "chance to project a faster-moving image by engaging customers at more regular intervals than it has through its Olympic and NASCAR sponsorships." Kodak Chief Business Development Officer Jeff Hayzlett: "I love the Olympics, but it only occurs every two years" (FORBES.com, 6/26).
