Zell Discusses Attempts To Sell Cubs,
Wrigley Field During CNBC Appearance |
Tribune Co. Chair Sam Zell appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Friday morning and was asked whether he will sell the Cubs to the highest bidder. Zell: “First of all, there are 10 groups that have been approved by MLB, and those are the only people that we can talk to with reference to the Cubs.” The Cubs currently have the best record in MLB and a World Series victory would likely increase the franchise's value, but Zell said, “As far as I’m concerned, I announced that we were going to sell the Cubs. I’m thrilled with how well the Cubs are doing. I think that there’s somebody out there who really wants to hold that trophy and I hope this is the year we get the trophy and I’m planning to find that guy.” Meanwhile, CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla noted that the Chicago Tribune “has a great cross-town rivalry going” with the Chicago Sun-Times. Zell: “As far as that other newspaper is concerned, fortunately I haven’t had to spend much time worrying about them or their credibility” (“Squawk Box,” CNBC, 6/27).
