Grousbeck Looking To Start
Sports Business Investment Fund
In Boston, Steven Syre reports Celtics CEO & Managing Partner WYC GROUSBECK in recent months has been “quietly pitching” a fund dedicated to sports business investments. One person familiar with the fund idea “described it as still developing, though Grousbeck is interested in raising about $200[M] to invest in sports opportunities.” Grousbeck is "working on the fund" with Celtics investor Mark Wan. Grousbeck declined to comment on the fund (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/27).

CHARITY STRIPE: Oklahoma State Univ. alumni AMY and MALONE MITCHELL III, the founders of “several energy companies” in Oklahoma, have donated $57.2M to the school. Half of the donation will benefit the athletics department, but “no specific plans have been announced” (DAILY OKLAHOMAN, 6/27)….Minor League Baseball (MiLB) has established MiLB Charities, a tax exempt charitable organization affiliated with the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. The first act of the charity will be to donate $50,000 to the four Minor League cities in Iowa affected by recent floods -- Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Des Moines (MiLB). 

NAMES: U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps Thursday was profiled in a continuing series called “Countdown To Beijing” on NBC’s “Today.” NBC’s Matt Lauer said to Phelps, who attends the Univ. of Michigan, “You’re the most dominant athlete who lives anywhere near here and they probably know the linebacker on the football team better than you.” Phelps: “That’s how it works sometimes” (“Today,” NBC, 6/27)....Former Vanderbilt Univ. AD ROY KRAMER Thursday was inducted into the inaugural class of the Vanderbilt Athletic HOF (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 6/27)….Syracuse Univ. has been awarded two national Telly Awards for excellence in film and video production. Both commercials were produced by Syracuse Athletics Dir of Media Properties & Productions ROGER SPRINGFIELD (Syracuse Univ.)….Northern Ohio Golf Charities has named World Golf HOFer CHARLIE SIFFORD ’08 Ambassador of Golf (PGA Tour)....Former Packers Chair & CEO BOB HARLAN, with the help of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s DALE HOFMANN, on June 1 released his autobiography, “GREEN AND GOLDEN MOMENTS” (KCI Sports Ventures).
