Alderson Fielding Tough Questions
During Weekly Radio Appearances
In San Diego, Jay Posner writes of Padres flagship radio station XEPRS-AM, "More and more during this dreadful Padres season, the hosts are speaking the ugly truth. The result has been some fascinating radio." Padres CEO Sandy Alderson appears on the station for a weekly show, and the fact he "does the show each Wednesday ... and that [hosts Darren Smith and Bill Werndl] aren't afraid to mix in some tough questions should be appreciated." The station's game broacasts are "different, of course, because the announcers are employed by the club, not the station." Alderson said that he "doesn't expect the announcers to be 'homers,' but he does expect their comments to be 'reasonable and moderate'" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/27).

BUNDESLIGA BIDDING: DAILY VARIETY's Ed Meza reports KirchGroup Founder Leo Kirch's plan to "market prepackaged Bundesliga soccer programming is ... attracting interest from some major players." Germany's biggest regional cable carrier Kabel Deutschland "may end up competing against [cable operator] Premiere for the Bundesliga, which Kirch is marketing from 2009-15, if the Federal Cartel Office greenlights the plan" (DAILY VARIETY, 6/27).

NOTES: The CBC for its coverage of this summer's Beijing Games has added 19 Olympians and one Paralympian, including Gold Medal-winning sprinter Donovan Bailey and hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser, to its broadcasting team, the "most athletes" to be named to the coverage (TORONTO SUN, 6/27)....The PBR on August 10 in Del Mar, California, will launch the '08 PBR Team Shootout, a five-event original series featuring a new two-man team competition to be broadcast on ESPN2. The series marks PBR's first bull riding broadcasts on an ESPN net (PBR).
