Chamber Of Commerce Voices Late Support For Rays' Ballpark Plan

St. Petersburg Chamber Of Commerce Issues
Favorable Report On Proposed Rays Ballpark
The St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce Thursday issued a report "largely supporting" the Rays' $450M downtown waterfront ballpark plan, a day after the Rays suspended their push for a November referendum on the plan and restarted their stadium search with a group of community leaders, according to Aaron Sharockman of the ST. PETERSBURG TIMES. While chamber officials "did not formally endorse" the Rays' waterfront ballpark proposal, members of the group's task force on baseball said that "several aspects of the waterfront location seemed ideal." Steve Raymund, co-Chair of the chamber's task force, in defending the downtown site, said that a ballpark at the Al Lang Field site "would cost less and potentially offer more in return than other locations." Chamber President John Long: "There are other communities that would like to have our team. And they would not worry about cost." Sharockman notes it is "unclear whether the chamber's view will help guide or assist the broad coalition of community leaders forming to investigate sites for a new Rays' ballpark." Rays officials Thursday said that the chamber's "recommendation would not have altered their decision to delay the stadium push." Meanwhile, Sharockman reports the chamber is "launching a program aimed at helping the team in the short run." Long said that the chamber will "offer up to a $600 discount for any of its 2,800 members who renew their chamber membership and purchase Rays season tickets for the second half" of the '08 season (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 6/27).
