Kansas Adds Open-Air Luxury Seats, Recliners To Memorial Stadium

Univ. Of Kansas Luxury Seats Include Recliners,
Free Food And Drinks, Flat-Screen TVs
The "open-air luxury seats that are being installed behind" the south end zone at the Univ. of Kansas' (KU) Memorial Stadium this season will feature leather recliners, free food and drinks and flat-screen TVs at a cost of $2,500 per season, according to Mara Rose Williams of the K.C. STAR. The seats, which will be six feet off the ground and 10 yards beyond the end zone, will cost $2,200 if fans "switch out the recliner for a stool." The new seats are "seven times more expensive than what had been the most expensive nonsuite season tickets" for KU football games. KU Associate AD for External Relations Jim Marchiony: "We wanted to do something to add ambiance and excitement to the open end zone." NCAA Dir of Communication Strategies Chuck Wynne: "The truth is, for the vast majority of schools, athletic expenses exceed athletic revenues. That means athletic departments across the country are being forced to find new ways to raise revenues and cut expenses" (K.C. STAR, 6/26).
