U.S. Again Without F1 Race; Sport Faces Battle At The Top

U.S. Races Absent From '09 F1 Schedule
The FIA yesterday released the '09 F1 schedule "without a spot for a race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway [IMS] or anywhere in" the U.S., according to Curt Cavin of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. IMS officials "have not been able to secure a promotional and financial package, including a title sponsor, for the future." IMS President & COO Joie Chitwood: "I still think there's a home for F-1 in the U.S., but it's getting the right partner to activate and promote it. That's a vital component. ... The door remains open for the future. There continues to be dialogue (with F-1)" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 6/26).

FUTURE OF THE SPORT: In London, Edward Gorman reports the FIA took the first step in FIA President Max Mosley's "masterplan to wrest control of [F1] and its revenues from [F1 Management Chair] Bernie Ecclestone yesterday by announcing that it is to conduct a full review of the way the sport is governed." Following a meeting of its World Motor Sport Council in Paris, the FIA said that it "will enter into 'a wide-ranging consultation with the [F1] teams to examine plans for improved efficiency, including new technical regulations for the championship.'" The FIA added that the review "will include a rethink of the 'governance of [F1].'" Gorman notes this "marks the first salvo in what some view as a battle between Mosley and Ecclestone over the future of the sport and the hundreds of millions of pounds it generates" (LONDON TIMES, 6/26).
