Marketplace Roundup

In Portland, Laura Gunderson reports California-based outdoor apparel retailer Horny Toad Activewear has "agreed to buy the Nau brand," which closed its five stores in early May. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. Horny Toad will operate Nau as a wholly owned subsidiary with an office in Portland near Horny Toad's sole store. Nau will return with "plans for more green operations and giving, without costly stores." Nau's holiday collection will go on sale as early as October online and at select potential retailers (Portland OREGONIAN, 6/25).

WAIT AND SEE: CNBC.com's Darren Rovell noted none of the projected top picks in tomorrow's NBA Draft have signed with a shoe company, which is "partly due to the fact that there's just not one standout slam dunk, marketable player" in the draft. While the power five years ago was "in the hands of the players and the agents ... all the power is in the hands of the shoe companies" currently due to the state of the market and the players. Rovell: "It looks like they're content to wait to see who goes where before they decide how much to pay them or if they should go after them at all" (CNBC.com, 6/23).

ZOOK ZONE: Univ. of Illinois (UI) football coach Ron Zook has spearheaded a move to create "Zook Zone" towels for the upcoming football season. The bright orange towels go on sale July 1 and will cost $7. For each towel sold, $1 will go cancer research (DAILY ILLINI, 6/24).
