MacFarlane Partners Layoffs Complicate MLS Stadium Effort

MacFarlane's Efforts For New United
Venue Could Be Hampered By Layoffs
MLS United co-Owner and MacFarlane Partners Managing Principal Victor MacFarlane last week "laid off 15 employees nationwide, including three in DC," moves that "could further complicate efforts to build a soccer stadium" for United at Poplar Point in DC, according to Jonathan O'Connell of the WASHINGTON BUSINESS JOURNAL. The layoffs included MacFarlane Partners VP/Community Affairs & PR Linda Greene, a "key player in the soccer stadium debate" who served as a "liaison between the company" and the DC Council. DC Council sources said that Greene's departure "could badly harm MacFarlane's efforts to secure public funding for a stadium." MacFarlane spokesperson Julie Chase said that Greene has been offered a "similar role" with United, which will "allow her to focus on the team exclusively." Greene has yet to accept or decline the offer. O'Connell noted the city last year chose Clark Realty Capital LLC to handle the Poplar Point development after talks between MacFarlane and the city "broke down," and "negotiations to include a soccer stadium as part of Clark's project have been ongoing" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/24). Chase said that Green's position with United "would allow her to continue to focus on the team's stadium in DC" and Prince George's County, Maryland. Sources said that MacFarlane VP/Business Development Dana Bryson will be the company's only remaining exec in DC (WASHINGTONCITYPAPER.com, 6/23).
