Shoe Storrs: UConn Agrees To 10-Year, $46M Deal With Nike

UConn Board Of Trustees Approves
School's 10-Year Deal With Nike
The Univ. of Connecticut's Board of Trustees yesterday approved a 10-year, $46M deal with Nike to become the sole apparel, footwear and equipment provider for the school, according to Grace Merritt of the HARTFORD COURANT. The deal is "believed to be one of the biggest in the country," and UConn AD Jeff Hathaway said that Nike will provide $31M in goods and "pay the balance ... in cash." He said that would include $1M "earmarked for a proposed basketball practice facility, $1[M] for athletic scholarships, and the rest, roughly $13[M], for the athletic operating budget." Hathaway added that Nike will be able to "advertise at UConn athletic venues and would receive free tickets to games." Merritt reports the contract will now head to the university, Nike and Connecticut state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal "for review and signing." The agreement marks the "first such 'all-campus' deal for UConn covering the entire athletics division." Hathaway said the deal is separate from personal endorsement deals men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun, women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma and football coach Randy Edsall have with Nike (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/25).
