Open Mike: Fox Formally Introduces Strahan To Pre-Game Team

Strahan To Join "Fox NFL
Sunday" Pregame Show
Fox yesterday formally introduced recently retired Giants DE Michael Strahan as an analyst on its "Fox NFL Sunday" pregame show after signing him to a four-year deal "believed to be worth about $2.3[M]," according to Neil Best of NEWSDAY. Strahan signed with Fox after "fielding offers from other networks," and Fox "wanted Strahan's personality, which it believes will fit right in with an entrenched, irreverent cast." Strahan on the show is expected to sit between Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson. Best notes Strahan yesterday was "30 minutes into his new career being paid to express opinions, and he wasted no time showing his willingness to do so," defending Giants WR Plaxico Burress in his contract dispute with the team. Strahan: "It's a one-way contract, so the players, you have no rights. They can come in and say, 'You suck, get out of here,' but I can't walk into the team and say, 'You know, this team really sucks. I want to go somewhere else.'" Fox' Terry Bradshaw during the presser asked Strahan, "It's amazing, isn't it, the guys that we couldn't get interviews with who are now doing broadcasting, and you're one of them?" Strahan yesterday said to Giants VP/Communications Pat Hanlon, "I'd like to put in my request for an hour sit-down with [Giants coach Tom] Coughlin." Hanlon, referring to NBC's Tiki Barber, a former Giant who criticized Coughlin, said, "You'll have better luck than NBC did last year" (NEWSDAY, 6/25).

WORTH THE WAIT: In N.Y., Bob Raissman writes Fox Sports Chair & Exec Producer David Hill and President Ed Goren have "always looked to the future," and they are "positioning Strahan as their bridge to the great beyond, which in NFL terms means the beginning of the next TV contract." Bradshaw "may be the current star, but Strahan is on deck and walking toward home plate." Hill yesterday said that since Fox Sports' inception in '94, "no player coming out of the NFL has shown as much broadcast talent, and potential, as Strahan" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/25). Hill said of Strahan: "This has been the only person we've seen in the last 15 years to be worth extending the desk for." Asked about being part of a game-day broadcast team, Strahan said, "I'm going to do what David and Ed tell me to do. I'm a player on a new team and I'm a rookie. I want to make sure I fit in and add something to the show" (N.Y. POST, 6/25).
