Blog Hound: What Is The PGA Tour Without Tiger Woods?

Bloggers discuss how Tiger Woods missing the rest of the year due to knee surgery will affect the PGA Tour.

"We all know about how the ratings will suffer, as golf won’t be able to grab the casual fan but hey, there was a PGA tour before Tiger and there will be one without Tiger."

"When Woods plays, the world watches. When he doesn't play, no one seems to care about golf."

"TV Executives, Event Title Sponsors, FedEx, the PGA, Nike, Gatorade, etc. are all scrambling and rightfully so… they have all committed a lot of time, energy and money into Tiger’s game."

"There are a lot of great, young players on Tour, many that have won this season.  Hopefully, they can grab the headlines and provide the drama that we expect from tournament golf and Woods."

"On the morning and afternoon after Boston won its 17th NBA Title, Tiger Woods led all of the news shows. Even the opinion shows like PTI or ATH started with Tiger."

BUILDING THE BUZZ: Sports Media Challenge's Buzz Manager™ analyzed online discussion of how the PGA Tour will be affected by the absence of Tiger Woods for the rest of the season. Bloggers who think the absence of Woods will be good for the Tour because other players will have an opportunity to shine were tallied as Positive, while bloggers who think the absence of Tiger will hurt the Tour and all the popularity gains it has made were counted as Negative. See more on the topic.

  • The Buzz ranked 10 of 10, a topic of very high interest among sports bloggers.
  • Bloggers in the Positive category were excited about the possibility of other players having more opportunities to win. Many thought that without Tiger, another player would emerge as a star, perhaps the new favorite, Rocco Mediate. Some saw Tiger as over-hyped anyway, and look forward to Tiger-less media coverage of golf. Another blogger pointed out that there are many golf tournaments that Tiger already does not participate in and they are still popular.
  • Some bloggers were neutral on the topic, believing that the PGA Tour has enough other stars to lean on. They also believed that while some casual fans may not watch as much, true golf fans would still tune in as much as always.
  • The majority of bloggers lamented the loss of Tiger, believing that TV ratings will drop and many casual golf fans will be lost. Some believe there are more Tiger fans than actual golf fans. They also think it is very unfortunate that the PGA Tour will not be able to capitalize on all the publicity and high TV ratings brought on by last weekend’s U.S. Open drama and will drop out of the mainstream audience.
