It's A Wrap: American Film Institute Announces Top Sports Movies

CBS last night aired “AFI’s 10 Top 10,” where the American Film Institute ranked the top 10 movies in 10 categories, including Romantic Comedy, Fantasy, Mystery, Epic, Western, Sports, Animation, Gangster, Sci-Fi and Courtroom Drama. The sports category was hosted by actor CUBA GOODING JR., who won an Oscar for his role in “Jerry Maguire,” which is No. 10 on the list of top sports movies. Gooding: “At their best, sports pictures are the movies’ most idealistic form. They don’t often deal in scandal. They’re much more likely to be inspirational. You know, underdogs beating the odds or hotshots learning humility. A lot of them have a tragic theme. … Mostly, they teach us that winning a championship is never as important as competing gracefully under pressure. So, it’s not about the victory or fame or even winning or losing, but the spirit inside that drives us all” (CBS, 6/17). The following is the AFI's top 10 sports movies.
