Thoroughbred Safety Committee
Recommends Whip Restrictions

The Thoroughbred Safety Committee yesterday, two days before a Congressional hearing on horse racing, said that it is "recommending a ban on horseshoes with toe grabs and a number of whip-related restrictions." The committee also "called for the elimination of steroids in training and racing." NTRA President Alex Waldrop and Breeders' Cup Chair Bill Farish released statements "endorsing the safety panel's recommendations, as did several other horse racing bodies" (L.A. TIMES, 6/18).

NASCAR LAWSUIT: In Indianapolis, Steve Ballard writes former NASCAR technical inspector Mauricia Grant's $225M sexual and racial harassment lawsuit against NASCAR "poses a significant threat to the sport's reputation by reinforcing old stereotypes and undermining its efforts to diversity." Even if the suit is dismissed, NASCAR "won't escape unscathed." And if a "substantial number of the charges turn out to be true and Grant either wins at trial or receives a sizable settlement, it raises the question of whether this was an isolated case or endemic to the work environment and indicative of deeper-rooted problems." Virginia Commonwealth Univ. associate professor Michael Pitts said that the lawsuit is going to "compel NASCAR to review its hiring and training practices and in the long run could have a positive impact on promoting diversity in the sport" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 6/18).

ROAD TRIP: The IRL championship celebration, held the past two seasons at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, this year will be staged November 5 at The Palms in Las Vegas (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 6/17).
