City Council Delays Vote On 49ers Stadium By At Least A Year

Santa Clara City Council Extends Deadline For
49ers Stadium Financing Deal Until February
The Santa Clara City Council yesterday voted 6-1 to extend the deadline for a 49ers stadium financing deal to February, "a move that delays a ballot measure to next June at the earliest or November 2009 at the latest," according to Sandra Gonzales of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Santa Clara and the 49ers had "hoped to have a deal by July 22," but "talks have gone much slower than expected, with several points yet to be ironed out." Council member Jamie McLeod, the only member to oppose the extension, said that the team has "agreed to only cover cost overruns for one year after the stadium's expected 2012 completion." Gonzales notes "at least one stumbling block in the negotiations is the city's demand that the 49ers pay rent directly to the city's general fund to use a city-owned parking lot" where the stadium would be built. That parking lot is currently used for overflow parking at Great America, and "negotiations between the team and the amusement park have hit a roadblock." City and team officials said that despite the extension, the stadium will "still be ready to open in 2012 and deflected speculation that the project is in any jeopardy" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 6/18).

BAD TIMING: In S.F., Ray Ratto writes, "This allows people who are understandably irked by the whole publicly financed-stadium [PFS] scam to remind casual voters that PFS plans are merely a slow-motion swindle to be avoided by anyone in his or her right mind." The 49ers' Owners, the York family, "aren't anywhere close to getting [a stadium]. Not in [S.F.], not in Santa Clara ... nowhere. They're not organized enough, they're not positioned well enough, the cities they are trying to soak aren't flush enough." The Yorks "should be in front of this delay, not behind it." The Yorks "still don't have the Great America people, they don't have the pols, they don't have the voters and they don't have the money, so why not look like you're doing a favor by acknowledging what you already don't have?" This is "a lousy time to ask for money" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/18).
