RSL Parking Plan Approval Paves Way for On-Time Stadium Opening

RSL Expecting To Receive Approval
For Parking Plan At New Stadium
The Sandy (UT) Planning Commission tomorrow likely will give MLS Real Salt Lake (RSL) the "OK for its parking plan" for the team's new soccer-specific stadium, according to Rosemary Winters of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. The parking plan is a "mechanism that has to be in place in July as a condition of the $10[M] property-tax subsidy that Sandy plans to hand over at the end of that month." Sandy "required that RSL arrange for parking for 5,300 cars, including 1,000 on site." Stadium Project Manager Mike Steele said that the team "has met the requirements -- and then some," as there are 1,400 stalls at the stadium and another 5,400 in lots nearby. The team also "plans to block parking on residential streets by posting signs." RSL President Bill Manning said, "Construction is on schedule. ... We would like to open a few weeks early to get a couple of games in there ... That would be awesome." RSL is scheduled to play its first game in the stadium October 9 against the Red Bulls. Manning said that "retail store and 'back-of-house' facilities ... could be temporarily sacrificed" in order to open the stadium on time. Winter writes the October 9 game "can be played at Rice-Eccles Stadium if the Sandy concession-stands aren't ready to dispense beer, soda and foot-long hot dogs" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 6/18).
