MLB Commissioner Bud Selig Participates In ESPN.com Q&A

Selig Discusses MLB's Drug
Policy, Instant Replay In Q&A
MLB Commissioner Bud Selig participated in a Q&A with ESPN.com's Howard Bryant, where he discussed several hot topics. When asked about the feedback he has received from Congress after MLB "once again toughened its drug policy," Selig said, "I'm satisfied with the results. Congress? I don't hear a thing. I think they are more than satisfied. Look, I hired George Mitchell, whom I have a lot of respect for. ... And we adopted all of his recommendations. So, I think Congress, the last two times I was there, they were great to me. Nobody says anything to me. The only word I get out of [DC] is that they're done with us." Bryant noted U.S. House Committee on Oversight & Government Reform Chair Henry Waxman (D-CA) recently asked MLB to "provide additional information regarding" testimony from the '05 hearings. Selig: "We recently had a request from Congress on a narrow factual issue, but I have seen no indication of dissatisfaction with the actual program and the progress we have made." When asked if he was "on board with the momentum toward instant replay," Selig said, "I would say if we do it ... it will be a most limited way. I know other sports are using IR and I have different thoughts on that. I am a purist, but I'm the same purist that went to interleague play and the wild card." When asked if he was going to sell the Cubs to Madison Dearborn Partners Chair & CEO John Canning, Selig said, "There are seven groups bidding. What happens in this case ... and John is a friend of me, there's no hiding that. The Tribune Company will get the bids and come to us and they will recommend who they want and who they think and it comes back to me and [MLB's] ownership and they will approve or disapprove." Selig noted the Rays' attendance is up 4,500 from '07, but he said, "It's not enough. They can't make it in [Tropicana Field]. ... They need a new stadium. The demographics of the Tampa-St. Pete area are good enough for [MLB]" (ESPN.com, 6/17).
