Chivas USA Eyeing Santa Ana As Possible Home
Once Contract Expires At The Home Depot Center |
MLS Chivas USA confirmed that it is in talks to build fields and possibly a youth stadium at Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana, California, fueling “speculation among soccer fans that Chivas USA itself was contemplating a move to the city,” according to Tony Barboza of the L.A. TIMES. Chivas USA co-Owner Antonio Cue “did not rule out” that the site could eventually house Chivas USA. But the club is "locked into a contract to play" at The Home Depot Center until '09. Cue said that Santa Ana’s "large population of soccer fans and young people make the city an attractive location.” Cue: “We’re open to possibilities, but not in the short term. … But we also believe [a youth program] pays off with a fan base in the future." Cue said that the proposed youth soccer facility “could include as many as seven soccer fields and a 2,000 to 3,000-seat stadium." Cue added that a "detailed proposal is months away.” Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido last week said, “We’re talking about working on soccer programs, youth programs, and what we can do that is vibrant and challenging.” However, Barboza noted the proposal is "complicated by the fact” that the golf course is owned by the neighboring city of Garden Grove, and the course has been targeted in the past for “grandiose, yet quick-to-evaporate projects, including [an NFL] stadium” (L.A. TIMES, 6/14).
