Virgin Mobile Close to Becoming ArenaBowl Title Sponsor
Virgin Mobile USA is “close to signing on” as the first title sponsor of the AFL's ArenaBowl championship game, according to Terry Lefton in this week's SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. AFL team sources said that “preliminary approval has been given and that a one-year deal was undergoing final approval by attorneys last week.” As part of the deal, the game will be referred to as the Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl, and the company will receive “inclusion in the AFL’s championship name and logo, ads on the game broadcast on ABC and logos on the field, dasherboard and on uniforms at ArenaBowl XXII,” which will be played July 27 at New Orleans Arena. The deal does not include title rights to the Foster ArenaBowl Trophy, “an idea the CFL is floating for the Grey Cup.” The deal represents the AFL’s “first significant sponsorship sale in some time” (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/16 issue). Sources said that the title sponsor deal with Virgin is worth $750,000-1M and includes a one-year league option (THE DAILY).
