De La Hoya (l) To End His Boxing
Career With Bout In December |
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer Thursday said that boxer Oscar De La Hoya's final fight will be held December 6 at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden and will be broadcast on HBO PPV, according to Steve Carp of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. Schaefer said of a potential opponent for the bout, "We are looking at several options." De La Hoya was scheduled to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. September 20 at the MGM, but Mayweather last week announced his retirement. After Ricky Hatton declined to accept an offer to replace Mayweather in the fight, Golden Boy decided to "reduce De La Hoya's planned farewell tour," which included a bout last month against Steve Forbes, from three fights to two (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 6/13). Schaefer said that De La Hoya's opponent for the December bout could be Miguel Cotto if he defeats Antonio Margarito on July 26 (ESPN.com, 6/12).
