BMX Set To Join Olympics As IOC Seeks To Appeal To Younger Demo

Harris Considers Olympics
The Ultimate Sporting Event
The addition of BMX to this summer's Beijing Olympics represents "another example of the [IOC] attempting to appeal to a younger audience," according to Don Norcross of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. USA Cycling Saturday will conduct its Olympic Trials for men's BMX at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Chula Vista, California. The USOC and USA Cycling in January unveiled a BMX course at the OTC that is a "near-exact replica of the Beijing track" at a cost of $450,000-500,000. BMX "at times seems like uncontrolled chaos," and since the IOC in '03 approved the sport, BMX has created the "bigger drop-in and the supercross discipline." Like skateboarders "gradually adjusting to higher ramps, most of the cyclists have acclimated to the towering drop-in." U.S. BMX hopeful Steven Cisar: "The first time I ever got on one of those ramps, I was nervous. ... Now, it's more natural, like where I belong. It's where BMX needs to be all the time" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/13). U.S. BMX Olympic hopeful Bubba Harris: "The Olympics is the sporting event of all time. If you're even able to call yourself an Olympian, that's saying something. And for BMXers to have that ability now, it's amazing. We will be the first" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 6/13). In Denver, John Henderson notes BMX is "one of three new Olympic medal events," including open-water swimming and women's steeplechase. Henderson: "A note to purists who view BMX as X Gamers intruding on sacred Olympic turf: BMX is not even in the X Games" (DENVER POST, 6/13).
