Names & Faces: Ovechkin Launches New Clothing Line

CCM by Roger Edwards and Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin, who Thursday night was named NHL MVP, have launched the Ovechkin Designer Street Wear Collection for men, which is available exclusively at Canadian retailer Pro Hockey Life & Sports Gilbert Rousseau. The collection includes short- and long-sleeved T-shirts, fleece and assorted headwear. All items feature Ovechkin's signature "8" logo embedded in custom graphics (Reebok-CCM). In DC, Argetsinger & Roberts report the line was "originally slated for the Russian market" but was "snapped up" by Pro Hockey Life. The line is available only in Canada, but "plans are in the works to sell it in DC" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/13).

EXPECT CONFUSION: In Seattle, Jayda Evans reported WNBA Storm G Sue Bird and F Lauren Jackson will be the next WNBAers featured in the league's "Expect Great" campaign. The spots, which "have a dose of sarcasm as players state why a typical male fan won't attend a game," are "receiving mixed reviews around the league." Jackson said of the campaign, "The first time I heard it ... I actually thought somebody was mocking us. So, I wasn't too keen on them. But I've done one now and can't be a hypocrite, so I really like them" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/12).

SUMMER STAR: In Cincinnati, John Eckberg reported Macy's will feature Reds 2B Brandon Phillips as one of 15 MLBers in its "Boys of Summer" sales promotion. The Reds in honor of Flag Day Saturday will support the effort by offering free Reds team flags presented by Macy's to the first 20,000 fans in attendance (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 6/12).

NOTES: Boxer Laila Ali, who is six-months pregnant, will be featured in a global print and TV campaign for Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula stretch mark products. Ads are slated to run on broadcast outlets and in major magazines in the fall (THE DAILY)....Billabong has signed surfer Greg Long to a four-year deal (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 6/11).
