EPL Chair's Recent Comments About
Top Clubs Could Cost Him His Job
English Premier League (EPL) Chair Sir David Richards “has privately admitted that he could lose his job following remarks about the damage that England’s elite clubs have done to the national team.” Richards, when asked earlier in the week about the number of foreign players on EPL clubs and its subsequent impact on England’s national team, said, “Does the Premier League hurt the national side? I think the answer to that has got to be yes.” EPL CEO Richard Scudamore indicated that Richards’ view “directly contradicted the [EPL] line.” Scudamore yesterday said Richards was “as distraught as I have ever seen him” (London TELEGRAPH, 6/12).

PUCKS & BUCKS: In Pittsburgh, Joe Starkey reports the average player salary in the NHL has reached $1.9M, surpassing the pre-lockout figure of $1.83M. The salary cap is “expected to climb to around $55[M] next season, with a floor of around $40[M] -- which means the new floor will eclipse” the salary-cap ceiling from the '05-06 season of $39M. Not as many players “make $1[M] per year as compared to before the lockout, but the minimum salary has rise from $180,000 to $475,000” (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 6/12).

URBAN RENEWAL: MLB has collaborated with USA Baseball to sponsor the inaugural Breakthrough Series at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California, during the week of July 21. The event will showcase high school juniors and seniors from urban areas throughout the U.S. (MLB).
