NHL Franchise Notes: FBI Subpoenas Del Biaggio Documents

In Nashville, Brad Schrade reports the FBI yesterday subpoenaed documents from the city of Nashville concerning Predators Minority Owner William “Boots” Del Biaggio and his role in purchasing the team last year. According to the subpoenas, which appear to be "tied to a federal investigation of Del Biaggio out of Northern California,” the FBI is seeking any documents that relate to Del Biaggio's "finances and financial condition” (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 6/12).

Balsillie's Ownership Bids
Harmed By Ties To Lawyer
BALSILLIE: While in Quebec City for the 2008 Int'l Ice Hockey Federation World Championships last month, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that “Canada should have at least one more NHL team" and added that Quebec City "should get its team back.” THE HOCKEY NEWS’ Ken Campbell wrote, “Now it looks as though he’s willing to stare down the league until it has no other choice but to include him.” Balsillie "would be good for the league and having him a part of it, either in Quebec City or somewhere else in Canada, is good for business” (THE HOCKEY NEWS, 6/10 issue). Meanwhile, Balsillie’s attorney Richard Rodier admitted that he and the NHL have “denigrated into a 'war of words' and the admission comes even as some NHL owners wonder why Balsille doesn't simply cut ties to Rodier." An NHL owner said of Rodier, “He’s not helping Balsillie any. If [Balsillie] went out and hired someone who knew the owners already and had relationships, Balsillie would have a team. Rodier only knows how to get under people’s skin” (TORONTO STAR, 6/10).

MAPLE LEAFS: In Toronto, Paul Hunter writes Maple Leafs interim GM Cliff Fletcher will remain in his role until after the ’08-09 season, when there will be "more available GM candidates to choose from after their contracts expire,” including Ducks Exec VP & GM Brian Burke (TORONTO STAR, 6/12). Also in Toronto Damien Cox writes under the header, "Peddie Era Continues To Linger Like A Bad Smell." Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment President & CEO Richard Peddie also will remain in his role, as he has “managed to survive. Again.” Peddie yesterday "angered ... a dozen NHL owners by publicly announcing that those GMs with a year left on their contracts ... are in his mind free agents-in-waiting. This is basically tampering with the entire league" (TORONTO STAR, 6/12).
