NHMS Offering Innovative Prizes To Woo Crowds To Cup Race

NHMS Running Mortgage, Free Gas Promotions
In Attempt To Sell Out Upcoming NASCAR Race
New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) officials, in an "innovative attempt to boost attendance," are offering to "pay the mortgage or rent through the remainder of the year for a ticket-holder" at the June 29 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Lenox Industrial Tools 300, according to Michael Vega of the BOSTON GLOBE. Five finalists will be selected from the NHMS ticketholder list, with the winner to be introduced during a prerace ceremony. Contestants must register as ticketholders by June 25 to be eligible. Meanwhile, NHMS officials also will give away $10,000 worth of free gas to 20 fans, with the winners being chosen via blind draw. NHMS Exec VP & GM Jerry Gappens said of ticket sales, "The renewal rates are very high, but I also recognize that there are challenges for some people that need to be met. ... We thought we'd come up with a fun program that would reward those people and also give an incentive for those people on the fence about buying tickets." NHMS has "recorded 26 consecutive sellouts," but Gappens said that about 6,000 tickets still are available for the June 29 race. Gappens: "We're about almost 3[%] behind where we were last year. There's a lot of assumption that you're already sold out, but we don't automatically sell out with renewals."

INDYCAR RACE: Gappens suggested that the IndyCar Series could return to the track "as early as next season." Gappens last weekend flew to Texas Motor Speedway to meet with IRL and SMI officials. Gappens: "We met them and they're working on their 2009 schedule and they're trying to pull that together within the next two weeks and we're looking to try and position ourselves in between our two (NASCAR Sprint) Cup dates (in June and September)" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/11).
