CFL Officials Proposed Aligning Teams With NFL Clubs During Talks

CFL Officials Reportedly Proposed
Aligning With NFL Teams
CFL officials suggested that the 32 NFL teams “be aligned among the CFL's eight teams” during negotiations with the NFL to continue their working relationship, according to sources cited by the GLOBE & MAIL's Allan Maki, who wrote under the header, “CFL's Options Limited In Fight Against NFL." The sources said that an affiliation with four NFL teams could be used for “player allocation and business or marketing ventures." The CFL last week was "quick to argue 'the concept of becoming an NFL developmental league' was never considered," and CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon said that he "did not support such a concept." But Maki noted what "wasn't denied was the CFL's willingness to play the equity card to co-exist” with the NFL. Also, if the NFL “was going to become part owner of the CFL, some sort of development role would have to be included." Maki: "What the CFL needs to consider is a scenario with the NFL completely ensconced in Toronto and how to make that workable" (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/9).

SHADES OF GREY: SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Don Muret reports the CFL is "considering the possibility of selling a presenting sponsorship" for the '09 Grey Cup. The league is looking for a five-to-10 year contract worth seven-figures annually. The deal would include "presenting sponsorship of the CFL playoffs and brand exposure on player jerseys and all the activities affiliated with the postseason." Cohon said, "We are talking about owning all of November" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/9 issue).
