The CBC Holding Contest To Find Replacement "HNIC" Theme Song

The CBC was unable to reach an agreement to maintain the rights to the theme song of its "HNIC," and the net now plans to conduct a nationwide search "for a new song, awarding [C$100,000] to whoever can come up with the best theme as decided by fans and experts," according to Tanya Talaga of the TORONTO STAR. Details of the contest "were scant, other than a portion of revenues generated will be donated to minor hockey." CBC Sports Exec Dir Scott Moore said that the net made offers to Copyright Music & Visuals (CMV) for rights to the song and "even tried to reach a partnership." Moore said that the CBC "also presented a 'high six-figure' offer to buy the song out completely" (TORONTO STAR, 6/7). Toronto-based agent John Ciccone, who reps Dolores Claman, the song's composer, said that the discussions "came to an end when the CBC refused to amend its offer." Moore said that the CBC "paid what he considered a generous amount for the use of the music." Moore: "It was the highest licence fee of any television show in Canada" (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/7).

REAX: In Calgary, Ian Robinson wrote "nobody in their right mind expects the CBC to get the important things right, because the CBC is the low-expectation child of the broadcast universe. ... So no, it's not shocking that the CBC has screwed this one up" (CALGARY SUN, 6/8). In Winnipeg, Tom Brodbeck wrote the "idiot at CBC who made this decision will be hauled by the scruff of the neck to the Hockey [HOF] in Toronto and given a public flogging if he or she doesn't reverse this moronic decision. I doubt, though, that it will even get that far. ... Negotiations will continue and this decision will be reversed" (WINNIPEG SUN, 6/8).
