In Portland, Rachel Bachman wrote the Univ. of Oregon's $200M basketball arena plan Friday "scored its biggest victory, receiving approval from the State Board of Higher Education." The 11-member board voted 7-0 with four abstentions on four separate votes: one approving the use of $200M in state-backed bonds for the arena and three "concerning Oregon's intent to bypass open-search rules and hire contractors handpicked for the job." With the "potential for months-long delays for land-use deliberations, the arena could still make its projected opening date of Nov. 1, 2010" (Portland OREGONIAN, 6/7).

USA BASKETBALL: In Las Vegas, Rob Miech reports USA Basketball cut Las Vegas from its list of relocation sites "in March and didn’t tell many about it.” Louisville, Glendale and Colorado Springs, the current home of the NGB, are the finalists, though a source said that Glendale “has the inside track.” Officials from USA Basketball and Wasserman Media Group, which has led the search, “were mum about the entire process” (LAS VEGAS SUN, 6/9).

Nearly $121M In Contracts For New Cowboys
Stadium Have Gone To Minority-Owned Businesses
COWBOYS: Nearly $121M worth of contracts for the Cowboys’ $1.1B Arlington stadium "have gone to minority- or women-owned business under a ‘fair share’ agreement.” By April, minority-and women-owned businesses had been awarded 28[%] of the contracts.” The fair share agreement “does not have goals for specific minority groups” (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/7).

KANSAS FOOTBALL: A new outdoor luxury seating section will be installed behind the south end zone of the Univ. of Kansas’ Memorial Stadium. The plan calls for the 56-seat area to include 22 flat-screen TVs, a hospitality area with “complimentary beverages and upscale buffets, and luxury chair-back seating." KU Associate AD/External Affairs Jim Marchiony said that “none of the seats have been sold.” The new section will be on display June 23 from 5:00-8:00pm CT (LAWRENCE JOURNAL-WORLD, 6/7).
