Cohon Says CFL-NFL Negotiations Over
New Working Agreement Not Progressing |
The CFL has "ceased negotiations on a new working agreement with the [NFL] -- ending a formal relationship that began" in '97, according to a front-page piece by Sean FitzGerald of the NATIONAL POST. The decision comes on the eve of the Bills' "unprecedented eight-game series that will open this summer in Toronto." CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon said that the leagues "maintain 'a strong relationship,'" but that talks are "not progressing as his employers might have hoped." Cohon: "We've communicated to the NFL that nothing's been put on the table that is going to strengthen and grow our league to my satisfaction, or the satisfaction of our [BOG]. And we're not moving forward with discussions with the NFL any more." FitzGerald notes the NFL earlier this week was notified of the decision. A CFL source said that the move is "based in part on a symbolic show of strength against a potential foreign invader." A CFL source said, "You work with us or you don't work with us, there's no half-pregnant." FitzGerald notes the two leagues have been "working without a new agreement since the old one expired" in '06. Under the old deal, the NFL was "granted access to CFL players entering a defined window in the option year of their contract." Cohon said that the practice "will be allowed to continue" (NATIONAL POST, 6/5).
