49ers, Santa Clara May Miss November Ballot In Stadium Planning

49ers, City Of Santa Clara May Not Complete
Stadium Plan In Time For November Ballot |
While the city of Santa Clara and the 49ers had initially "hoped to complete a stadium financing plan by July and place a ballot measure before voters in November," the chances that a deal "will be crafted within the initial timetable appear increasingly remote," according to Denis Theriault of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Santa Clara Council member Will Kennedy said of getting the measure on the ballot in November, "I don't know that we've ruled that out, but it's very, very tight right now." Council member Jamie McLeod said that Santa Clara "must not be swayed from securing the best deal for its residents." McLeod added that the council will "need to move the discussion from behind closed doors at some point this summer and let the public have its say." Theriault notes if the two sides do not complete a plan in time for November, then a potential special election in '09 "could cost the city more than $600,000." It also "could bring lower turnout" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 6/5).
PROP BET: In S.F., Robert Selna reports a "lurking question" over Proposition G, which was approved by voters on Tuesday, is whether the proposed 49ers stadium site "can be cleaned of industrial toxics and developed in time to meet the 49ers' stated deadline for a new stadium by fall 2012." Fleishman-Hillard Senior VP Pete Hillan, a 49ers spokesperson, said that the team would "need to see some key details of [developer Lennar Corp.'s] final plan -- such as transportation access for fans and a stadium-financing plan -- before they can say how well it might meet their needs" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/5).
DINING ALONE: In San Jose, Daniel Brown reports the 49ers have "declined to participate" in the S.F. Chamber of Commerce's annual kickoff luncheon after last year's event "left some with a bitter aftertaste." S.F. Mayor Gavin Newsom and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) last year spent "part of the luncheon very adamantly ... rallying against the team's proposed move south, with [49ers co-Owner] John York sitting in the audience" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 6/5).
