Lakers Ticket Prices, Merchandise Sales
Up Heading Into NBA Finals |
For the Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals, all "economic indicators are up," as ticket prices and merchandise revenue have "risen steadily through this postseason," according to a front-page piece by Steve Springer of the L.A. TIMES. AEG President & CEO Tim Leiweke, whose company owns and operates the Staples Center, said, "This is the biggest thing I've experienced at Staples Center since it opened. ... People are buying premier seats (starting at $15,000 each) for next season to get the right to buy tickets for this series." StubHub indicated that the "average resale price for the Finals is $772 in Los Angeles and $547 in Boston," up from '07 when prices averaged $366 in Cleveland and $311 in San Antonio. Meanwhile, Springer notes since the start of the Playoffs business is up 80% for NBAStore.com and 15% at the NBA Store in N.Y. AEG VP/Merchandising Sean Ryan said that foot traffic this month at Team L.A.'s Universal CityWalk outlet is up 400-500%, while the Staples Center location is up 300%. Springer notes Team L.A. for the Finals is selling a "leather jacket featuring both the Lakers and Celtics" for $1,500 (L.A. TIMES, 6/5).
NEW LAKERS DEAL: Sporting goods store Sport Chalet has signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the Lakers, making it the team's official sporting goods retailer. The deal begins next season and runs through 2011 and includes in-arena PA announcements, broadcast mentions and in-arena signage on Staples Center scoreboards and LED displays (Sport Chalet).
