Tiger Woods Tops SI's List Of Top Earners For Fifth Straight Year

Golfer TIGER WOODS for the fifth straight year leads SI's list of "The Fortunate 50," a ranking of the highest-earning U.S. athletes based on salary, winnings, bonuses, endorsements and appearances. Woods earned nearly $128M in '07, more than double his nearest competitor, golfer PHIL MICKELSON, who earned just over $62M. NBA players make up more than half of the list, while 10 MLBers, seven NFLers, three NASCAR drivers, three golfers and one boxer comprise the rest. No female athletes made the list. Meanwhile, SI's list of "The International 20" is led by Galaxy MF DAVID BECKHAM, who took in over $48M last year (SI.com, 6/3).

REAX: ESPN.com's Jackie MacMullan said of Bryant: “A few years ago, after the Colorado scandals, you would never guess him to be anywhere near this list and he has made a tremendous comeback.” ESPN.com's Kevin Blackistone noted Rodriguez earns just $6M in endorsements, meaning companies "really don’t like him and don’t want him endorsing their products, or he’s just a guy making so much money from the Yankees he doesn’t need to do other things.” Denver Post columnist Woody Paige said of Peyton Manning, "We see him in TV commercials every five minutes. Why shouldn’t he be in the top four or five?" ("Around The Horn," ESPN, 6/4).
