Approval Of Proposition G Keeps
Alive S.F.'s Hopes Of Retaining 49ers |
S.F. voters "appeared to overwhelmingly approve Proposition G on Tuesday, endorsing plans for a major housing and commercial development at the Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point and also keeping alive hope of holding on to the 49ers," according to Selna & Knight in a front-page piece for the S.F. CHRONICLE. In exchange for free land, developer Lennar Corp. has "promised to spend more than $1[B] on infrastructure to remake the combined 720 acres with homes, retail shops and a green office park ringed by 300 acres of parkland -- and possibly build a new stadium for the 49ers if the team stays in the city." Proposition G proponents said that the "failure of their measure and the passage of Prop. F would have killed their grand plan and that nothing would happen in the neighborhood for years to come" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/4). In San Jose, Denis Theriault notes Proposition G also was touted as a "long-needed boost for the city's beleaguered southeast corner." Proposition F, which sought to "dramatically increase the amount of affordable housing in the development," was "soundly defeated." 49ers VP/Communications Lisa Lang: "We feel it's very important for the Bayview and Hunters Point communities for this development to go forward. And it also holds open the possibility of an alternative site for that 49ers stadium." Theriault notes the while city of Santa Clara and 49ers officials "still hope to craft a stadium financing agreement by July in hopes of going to the voters in November, significant financial hurdles remain." The option to build in S.F. "appears likely to remain a viable fallback in case those talks falter." Santa Clara's plan, despite the city's "front-runner status, may yet prove vulnerable." Stadium opponents "question whether a deal to build a $916[M] stadium on a Great America parking lot will actually materialize" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 6/4). In S.F., Ray Ratto writes the "important thing to note here, even with the results as they are, is that the suggestion that there might be a New Candlestick is no closer to happening." Ratto: "You can't squeeze blood out of a turnip when the bank not only owns the new turnip but notices you're already way overdrawn on the old turnip" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/4).
