NHL Franchise Notes: Del Biaggio's Legal Issues Raise Questions

The Predators said in a statement that minority partner William "Boots" Del Biaggio's recent resignation from Sand Hill Capital amid an SEC investigation "has no impact on the Predators organizational operations.” However, the GLOBE & MAIL’s Allan Maki writes, “Still, questions abound: Is the Predators’ ownership group in need of a cash infusion, given Del Biaggio’s difficulties as the club’s second largest investor? Can the Predators withstand any financial difficulties in the wake of a report that noted the Predators were one of eight clubs that generated only $600,000 a game in ticket revenue last season?” (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/3).

CALL OF THE WILD: The MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL BUSINESS JOURNAL’s John Vomhof Jr. writes Wild Owner Craig Leipold is “focused on building relationships.” In addition to “meeting with sponsors, he plans to meet with groups of season-ticket holders at pancake breakfasts and barbecues as the 2008-09 season draws closer.” But Leipold “wants to focus more on providing service to existing customers than trying to sell new ones.” Wild Vice Chair Jac Sperling said of Leipold, “He’s got a Midwest temperament and his goal is to get people one-on-one and get to know them, so they trust him and believe him” (MINNEAPOLIS/ST.PAUL BUSINESS JOURNAL, 5/30 issue).

Burke Denies Report That He Asked To
Be Released From Contract With Ducks
DUCK HUNT: In L.A., Helene Elliott writes Ducks Exec VP & GM Brian Burke has denied a Toronto Sun report that he "met with his bosses and asked to be released from the final year of his contract, presumably so he would be free to become” Maple Leafs GM. Ducks CEO Michael Schulman: “We have and will continue to deny requests from other clubs.” Schulman “declined to specify which teams had inquired” about Burke (L.A. TIMES, 6/3). Meanwhile, the GLOBE & MAIL’s David Shoalts reports Ron Wilson is “poised to become the new head coach" of the Maple Leafs, which indicates interim GM Cliff Fletcher “will be running the Leafs at least through the summer and perhaps for another year, since Burke has one year left” on his Ducks contract (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/3).
