MISL Owners Confident Going Forward After Disbanding League

Vanderbeek Says MISL Disbanding Necessary
To Ensure Health, Stability Of New League
The MISL officially disbanded Saturday, but MISL New Jersey Ironmen Investor & Operator Jeff Vanderbeek yesterday said that the move was "necessary to ensure the financial health and stability of a new league that will be created for the fall," according to Frank Giase of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. Vanderbeek: "It's a structural thing to grow the league, nothing more. And that could not be done if this wasn't done. I'm pretty optimistic we'll be stronger next year." Giase notes "part of the league's problem was that stockholders and people associated with disbanded teams still had a say in league decisions," and their presence "also blocked future expansion from those cities." Vanderbeek: "We won't have the same name, but we'll be playing indoor soccer against a fair amount of teams this season. We won't miss a beat as far as I'm concerned" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 6/3). MISL Baltimore Blast Owner Ed Hale: "We just closed the door on the corporation and we're opening another door. This is not the end" (Baltimore SUN, 6/3).

READY TO MOVE FORWARD: In Milwaukee, Charles Gardner reports existing player contracts are "void due to the dissolution of the league, and all players are free agents eligible to sign with any team." MISL Milwaukee Wave COO Michael Lafferty: "We're starting with a clean sheet of paper. I'm excited. I wish they had done this four years ago, because we've got to get a model that works." Lafferty said that he "could envision a league with a revised cost structure and a six-team Midwest and six-team East division." Lafferty: "There are opportunities with arenas that are looking for tenants." Also, Gardner notes league owners will "consider reducing the length of the season, both in terms of months and games." The new season "might start in December rather than late October, although no final decisions have been made" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 6/3).

MORE CHANGES COMING: MISL Orlando Sharks President Rich Bradley said that the league's new format, "expected to be announced in two to three weeks," includes the "possibility of changing the league's name and moving" its HQs from Westport, Connecticut (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/3).  In Baltimore, Kent Baker reports current team owners later this week will discuss the possible "addition of another franchise in Mexico to join" the Monterrey La Raza (Baltimore SUN, 6/3). Philadelphia Kixx Owner & President Jeff Rotwitt said that the new league has "already looked into inquiries of starting organizations in New York, Richmond and Cincinnati, and even a possible return of the Cleveland Force," who have not been active since '05 (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 6/3).

TEAMS OPTIMISTIC: Lafferty said, "All teams are operating and it's business as usual. ... All we're waiting to hear now is how the league will be reformatted" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 6/3). Kixx Dir of Public & Community Relations Tom Hushen said the team is "continuing operations as normal and fully expect to play next season in a newly structured league" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 6/3). Detroit Ignition D Droo Callahan yesterday said, "I think in a short matter of time the league will be back. I don't know what it will be, but it will be a league that the Detroit Ignition will play in." Callahan added that Ignition Dir of Soccer Operations Mark Pulisic Friday at a team meeting indicated that the team is "doing well financially and has a future in Detroit." Ignition Dir of Communications Michelle Green said that team is "still selling season-ticket packages and conducting business as usual" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 6/3).
