Financial Disclosures From Kohl
Indicate Increase In Bucks' Revenues
In Milwaukee, Don Walker reported Bucks Owner Herb Kohl's recent financial disclosure report revealed gross receipts of $79.5M in '07, about $1.8M higher than '06. Several accountants and sports business experts said that the figure "more than likely represents team revenue." The Bucks' most recent team payroll was $62.5M, "roughly $11.5[M] less than revenue." Walker noted Bucks revenue in '00 totaled $50.9M (JSONLINE.com, 5/30).

PAY THE FARM: In DC, George Solomon wrote while the Lerner family's plan upon buying the Nationals in '06 for $450M was to "build the team by reconstructing the farm system and developing its own players rather than go the free agent path," the team's payroll of about $55M "needs a major bump to augment promising play from high draft picks" in the farm system. Solomon wrote the Nationals' owners, front office personnel, players, manager Manny Acta and the coaching staff all "need to do better" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/1).

STRONG PARTNERSHIP: SI.com's Lars Anderson wrote the "success of Toyota Racing Development quietly has been one of the biggest stories" of the NASCAR season. Toyota's partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has "turned out to be as perfect [of] a marriage as there is in the sport right now between a team and manufacturer." In JGR, Toyota got a "strong existing team that [has] competed for the championship nearly every season." Anderson predicts Toyota, which already has five Sprint Cup Series wins this year, will wind end up winning 13 races (SI.com, 6/1).

INT'L GROWTH: YAHOO SPORTS' Martin Rogers reported MLS Dynamo co-Owner Oscar De La Hoya has "talked about his desire to increase the number of Hispanic players in the squad in order to appeal to a wider market." De La Hoya: "Right now, the majority of our players are Caucasian. We are looking at different options to bring in the best players from Mexico because of Houston having such a large Latino population. We want to maybe bring in a couple of players from Mexico and mix it up a little." Rogers also noted De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer "have already looked into the possibility of buying" an English soccer team (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 5/30).
