McGlade To Be Introduced
As New A-10 Commissioner |
The Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) today will introduce ACC Associate Commissioner Bernadette McGlade as Commissioner, succeeding Linda Bruno, who resigned in December, according to Mike Kern of the PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS. A-10 Associate Commissioner Ray Cella, who has served as interim Commissioner since April, was "not a candidate for the position." McGlade will be the A-10's fifth commissioner since the league's inception in '76. McGlade's responsibilities with the ACC included "scheduling, television oversight and selection, budget management and serving as the institutional liaison with the women's basketball coaches, as well as directing officiating programs." McGlade also has served on the NCAA Management Council, and from '95-'00 served on the NCAA Women's Basketball Committee, including serving as Chair for the last two years of the term (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 6/2). The A-10 today held an 11:30am ET news conference at the Doubletree hotel in Philadelphia to make the announcement (ESPN.com, 6/1).
RIGHT FIT? Multiple A-10 sources said that McGlade "has a great handle on the current state of college athletics and will help the conference as it tries to move forward in the competitive world of garnering major television contracts" (ESPN.com, 6/1). In N.Y., Dick Weiss wrote McGlade has "always had a strong presence in women's sports, but has limited experience at best in men's basketball." The A-10 needs McGlade to "navigate through existing TV contracts and facilitate new ones that will get A-10 men's basketball ... much needed exposure" (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 6/1).
