Smith Named LMS President & GM,
SMI President & COO |
SMI yesterday promoted Exec VP/National Sales & Marketing MARCUS SMITH to Lowe's Motor Speedway (LMS) President & GM and SMI President & COO, replacing HUMPY WHEELER, who resigned last week, according to David Poole of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Smith, the son of SMI Chair & CEO BRUTON SMITH, had served in his previous role at SMI since '04. Bruton Smith said of Marcus Smith, "He's come up through the ranks at Charlotte, proven his business savvy with our most recognizable sponsors and handled our sanction negotiations with NASCAR" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 5/29). Meanwhile, Wheeler yesterday agreed to a "five-year consulting deal" with LMS (ESPN.com, 5/28).
LET'S WAIT A YEAR: ESPN.com's David Newton reported Bruton Smith has "set 2010 as his new target date to get a Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway." Smith said of the speedway, which he purchased last week, "I will bring a Cup date to that place. It's a fabulous market. Our sport needs to be there." Smith also said that Kentucky Speedway's appeal in the track's antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and ISC "needs to be settled." Smith: "I have nothing to do with that lawsuit. Their people, they entered an appeal. We'd like to see that go away. The quicker the better" (ESPN.com, 5/28).
