Bettman's FY '07 Earnings Down 5.5%, Rank Fourth For League Execs

Bettman's FY '07 Earnings Down 5.5%
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman for the FY ending June 30, 2007, earned $5.59M, making him the "fourth-highest-paid league executive in sports," according to NHL tax filings cited by Tripp Mickle of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. Bettman's salary fell 5.5% from FY '06. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly for FY '07 earned $1.74M, down 37% from $2.78M in FY '06. Daly's salary decrease is "attributable to a one-time bonus received after his work during" the '04-05 lockout. Filings indicated that the NHL for FY '07 paid out $29,856,366 in "employee compensation and benefits for its 47-employee office." The league's revenue over that period increased 11% to $64.66M. NHL licensing for FY '07 "surpassed pre-lockout levels of $4.04[M] for the first time," reaching $4.3M, and playoff assessments "hit an all-time high" of $6.09M. Additional revenue from NHL Enterprises and member clubs "pushed overall league revenue to $2.3[B] over roughly the same period." The filing also indicates that the NHL on October 3, 2006, "borrowed $44[M] from an existing $135[M] line of credit with Citibank." The filing indicates the loan was for "general business and working capital needs" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 5/26 issue).

NHLPA: NHLPA Exec Dir Paul Kelly last week said that the union "expects to announce in the next month or so that it has hired an experienced sports marketer from the [U.S.], but the union will not be opening a U.S. office." SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Liz Mullen notes Kelly previously had said that the NHLPA was eyeing N.Y., Boston, Chicago and L.A. for a second office, but the Toronto-based organization would have "risked losing its tax-free status if it had set up shop in a U.S. city" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 5/26 issue).
