Media Notes

In N.Y., Bob Raissman cites a source as saying that the NFL is "close to cutting a deal with Showtime" to air "Inside the NFL." HBO declined to renew the series last year (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/25).

INTO THE FRAY: In St. Louis, Dan Caesar cited sources as saying that Bonneville Int'l, which owns St. Louis-based WMVN-FM, has "been thinking seriously about switching" the station to a sports talk format. The goal of the station probably would be "to take over the market, not co-exist," and the station also "might pursue the play-by-play of at least one local team." It is believed that "overtures have been made to several people with big names in the St. Louis sports-talk scene" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 5/24).

OFF THE AIR: In Pittsburgh, Bob Smizik reports ESPN Radio 1250 Pittsburgh host Mark Madden has "been permanently removed from the air by ESPN." Madden last Wednesday at the opening of his show said of U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA), who a day earlier had been diagnosed with brain cancer, "I'm very disappointed to hear that Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts is near death because of a brain tumor. I always hoped Senator Kennedy would live long enough to be assassinated." No decision has been made on Madden's replacement (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 5/28).

Kruk To Serve As Analyst For
ESPN's Women's CWS Coverage
NOTES: ESPN's coverage of the Women's College World Series will feature John Kruk as a game analyst for 10 games, including the best-of-three championship series. Kruk will work with announcer Beth Mowins and analyst Jessica Mendoza (ESPN)....Rays Communications Manager Carmen Molina said that she "runs out of room on her sheet of media requests just about every day." In St. Petersburg, Tom Jones reports the Rays in '06 "would get, maybe, five to seven requests a day." Molina said the team this year gets "like 20 a day" (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 5/28).
