Kobe Advertises HyperDunks Shoes In Nike's Newest Viral Ad
Lakers G Kobe Bryant is featured in a new Nike "viral marketing video in which he was seen 'jumping' over a pool of snakes and dunking a basketball on the other end," according to Mike Bresnahan of the L.A. TIMES. Bryant appears in the spot with cast members from MTV's "Jackass." Bryant said that there were "140 snakes in the pool -- mainly anacondas and red-bellied snakes, but no black mambas because 'they're a little too deadly.'" When asked if he jumped over the pool by himself, Bryant said, "I had a little assistance, maybe. ... From the [Nike] HyperDunks," referring to the company's new basketball shoe (L.A. TIMES, 5/28). The commercial is via ad agency zambezi, Venice, California (OREGONLIVE.com, 5/23). CNBC's Darren Rovell wrote the viral campaign, which also includes a spot with Bryant jumping over a moving Aston Martin, "has passed the first rule of advertising -- that people actually realize who is endorsing what" (CNBC.com, 5/27).
ABOUT THE SHOES: SPORTINGNEWS.com's Chris Littmann noted Bryant "isn't even wearing" the HyperDunks during his NBA Playoffs games. Bryant during Spurs-Lakers Western Conference Finals Game One switched back to his Zoom Kobe III shoe and "has stayed in them since." But Lakers F Lamar Odom during Game Two of the Spurs-Lakers series "changed out of his Huarache Elites and into the Hyperdunks for the second half" (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 5/27). TNT's Craig Sager during Friday's Game Two noted Bryant during Game One wore "his Olympic defensive stopper 'jump over car' shoe," before switching shoes for the second half (TNT, 5/23).
