Nationals Cut Weekday Afternoon Games Because Of DC Congestion

Memorial Day Marks Nationals' Only '08 Weekday
Afternoon Game, As Traffic Concerns Prevent Others
The Nationals Monday hosted the Brewers in an afternoon game, but "because of concerns about parking and traffic congestion around Nationals Park, there will be no more weekday baseball matinees" in DC, according to Daniel LeDuc of the WASHINGTON POST. The Nationals were able to schedule Monday's game because it was Memorial Day and there were not concerns of an "evening rush clogging South Capitol Street when the game" finished. The Nationals last year hosted weekday afternoon games at RFK Stadium, but the team's schedule this season was "adjusted so that fans would not try to park amid the slowly burgeoning neighborhood's workday, then spill out of the ballpark just as the daytime denizens of downtown [DC] began their treks home to the suburbs." Nationals President Stan Kasten: "We love afternoon weekday games but had to hold off this year due to the uncertainty about daytime parking availability. We'd certainly like to have more next season, but no decisions have been made about '09." LeDuc noted "parking around the ballpark has not been as difficult as many had feared," and "that has fans of weekday afternoon games hopeful that their pleasure will return" (WASHINGTON POST, 5/26).
