Turnstile Publishing Announce Golfweek Layoffs, Fold Pubs

Turnstile Publishing made employee cuts at Golfweek and folded its Masters Athlete and Fish & Fly publications, resulting in a loss of 14 positions. Golfweek laid off one full-time writer and two editorial support staff, as well as production people tied to GolfweekTV, its original online video component launched in March ‘06. “One thing that we staffed up heavily in was the video side, and I think we overstaffed it,” said Golfweek Publisher Terry Olson. GolfweekTV will continue, but Olson expects to pare down some of its less popular programs. Olson said the cuts would have been made despite the negative press from the magazine’s January 19 noose cover. Olson: “You can’t carry publications and products that aren’t working, and when you realize its going to be an uphill battle you have to do the right thing to make your company stronger.” He said the magazine did not take a hit in subscriptions or advertising in the wake of the cover.
